چکیده

We discuss the structure of the effective Lagrangian for the (2,2) ZN orbifolds and the corresponding Calabi-Yau manifolds which are obtained by “blowing-up” the orbifold singularities. The method to “blow-up” such singularities is reviewed.’ Results are exact at the string tree-level. In particular the question of generating an intermediate scale MI in such models is addressed. It is shown that for ZN orbifolds (except one) and the corresponding blown-up orbifolds which are compactified on any six-torus T6 which can be obtained by continuously deforming -T4 @T2, all the terms of the type (27mK are absent from the effective superpotential, thus questioning the mechanism for generating a large intermediate scale for such compactifications. Suppression of nonrenormalizable terms in the effective superpotential for (blown-up) orbifold compactification.

We show that all the nonrenormalizable terms in the effective superpotential ---.. L for any Abelian symmetric orbifold with at least (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry as well as any blown-up (2,2) orbifold are exponentially suppressed by the size R of the compactified space, i.e. 0: exp(-R2/o!). On Orbifolds with Discrete Torsion

We consider the interpretation in classical geometry of conformal field theories constructed from orbifolds with discrete torsion. In examples we can analyze, these spacetimes contain " stringy regions " that from a classical point of view are singularities that are to be neither resolved nor blown up. Some of these models also give particularly simple and clear examples of mirror symmetry.

Phenomenological viability of orbifold models with three Higgs families

We discuss the phenomenological viability of string multi-Higgs doublet models, namely a scenario of heterotic Z3 orbifolds with two Wilson lines, which naturally predicts three supersymmetric families of matter and Higgs fields. We study the orbifold parameter space, and discuss the compatibility of the predicted Yukawa couplings with current experimental data. We address the implications of t...

Twisted Sectors and Chern-Simons Terms in M -Theory Orbifolds

It is shown that the twisted sector spectrum, as well as the associated Chern-Simons interactions, can be determined on M -theory orbifold fixed planes that do not admit gravitational anomalies. This is demonstrated for the seven-planes arising within the context of an explicit R × S/Z2 × T /Z2 orbifold, although the results are completely general. Local anomaly cancellation in this context is ...

The Standard Model from Stable Intersecting Brane World Orbifolds

We analyze the perturbative stability of non-supersymmetric intersecting brane world models on tori. Besides the dilaton tadpole, a dynamical instability in the complex structure moduli space occurs at string disc level, which drives the background geometry to a degenerate limit. We show that in certain orbifold models this latter instability is absent as the relevant moduli are frozen. We cons...
